Making Mechanical Marvels in Wood PDF

This is a book about wooden mechanisms: what they are, how they work, and how you can make them. In an era when even commonplace items are made of exotic compounds and alloys, it may surprise you to learn that throughout much of the history of civilization most machinery was made of wood. Until the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in 18th-century Britain, when iron became plentiful, large machinery in wind- and water-powered mills was built almost entirely of wood. The wooden gear wheels in many of these mills were five feet or more in diameter, and some were in daily use well into the 20th century. A number of such mills that have been well maintained are still in operation in the Netherlands and in Britain.
